10 Questions to Ask a Travel Agent Before Booking Your Honeymoon

The first thing most couples do after getting engaged is open a browser tab and start searching resorts. Three hours later, you have 47 tabs open, conflicting reviews, and no idea whether you should book the overwater bungalow or the swim up suite. I watch this happen every single week. And the couples who come to me after that spiral always say the same thing: "I wish I had called you first."
Working with a travel agent for your honeymoon is one of the smartest decisions you can make, but only if you ask the right questions before you commit to one. Not every agent specializes in honeymoons. Not every agent has actually visited the resorts they recommend. And not every agent will be transparent about how they get paid.
Here are the ten questions I think every couple should ask before handing over their honeymoon plans to anyone, including me.
1. Have You Personally Visited the Resorts You Recommend?
This is the single most important question, and the one most people skip. Anyone can pull up a resort website and read you the bullet points. A good honeymoon travel agent can tell you which building has the best sunset views, whether the adults only pool actually stays quiet, and how long the transfer from the airport takes on a bad traffic day.
I have walked the grounds at Sandals resorts across the Caribbean. I know that at Sandals Grande St. Lucian, the overwater bungalows book out months in advance and the Italian restaurant is the one you want to reserve first. That level of detail only comes from being there. If your agent has not visited the resort they are recommending, that is worth knowing before you book.
2. What Is Your Specialty?
Travel agents are not interchangeable. Some focus on cruises. Others do adventure travel or family Disney trips. You want someone whose business is built around honeymoons and romantic travel, because the details that matter for a couple celebrating their marriage are completely different from the details that matter for a family of five.
When I plan a honeymoon at a Sandals resort, I know which room categories have the best privacy, which properties are better for couples who want nightlife versus couples who want to decompress, and which excursions are worth the time. That is not generic knowledge. It comes from doing this specific type of trip planning repeatedly.
3. How Do You Get Paid?
A good travel agent will answer this without hesitation. Most honeymoon travel agents earn commission from the resorts and suppliers they book. That means working with an agent often costs you nothing extra compared to booking directly. Some agents also charge a planning fee, which typically covers the consultation, itinerary design, and ongoing support.
At Fancy Fox Travel, I charge a planning fee that reflects the time and expertise that goes into building a personalized honeymoon. That fee is separate from any commission. I am upfront about it because I believe transparency builds trust, and trust is the foundation of a good agent/client relationship.
4. What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?
This is the question that separates a booking engine from a real travel professional. When you book directly through a resort website, you are your own customer service department. If your flight gets canceled, your room is not what you expected, or a hurricane changes your plans, you are on hold with a 1 800 number hoping someone picks up.
When you book through an agent, you have someone in your corner who already has a relationship with the resort. I have rebooked clients same day, negotiated room upgrades when construction was happening nearby, and handled travel insurance claims so my clients did not have to. That advocacy is worth more than any discount code you will find online.
5. Can You Help Me Understand What "All Inclusive" Actually Means?
This trips up more honeymooners than you would expect. "All inclusive" does not mean the same thing at every resort. At some properties, top shelf liquor costs extra. At others, certain restaurants require a reservation fee. Spa treatments are almost never included.
At Sandals Resorts, all inclusive means premium liquor, all restaurants, all water sports, and even tips are included. That is genuinely one of the most comprehensive all inclusive models in the Caribbean. But even within Sandals, there are differences between room categories. Butler suite guests get priority dining reservations and a personal butler who will set up a private beach dinner for you. Your travel agent should be able to walk you through exactly what is and is not covered so there are no surprises once you arrive.
6. Do You Know About Current Promotions and How to Stack Them?
Resorts run promotions constantly, and the best deals are not always the ones advertised on the homepage. Right now, Sandals is running a Summer Loving Sale with up to $1,000 in instant credit plus a $175 spa credit and a free night for travel through October 2026. On top of that, their 777 Suite Deals offer an additional 7% off select suites.
A knowledgeable honeymoon travel agent knows how to combine promotions, apply the right booking window, and ensure you are getting the maximum value. I also know about the Sandals free honeymoon package, which gives you extras like a honeymoon dinner, a bottle of sparkling wine, and breakfast in bed. To qualify, you need to register before arrival with your wedding invitation or marriage certificate. Most couples do not know about that deadline until it is too late.
7. Which Resort Do You Actually Recommend, and Why?
Beware the agent who says "they are all great, it just depends on what you want." That is a non answer. A good agent has opinions backed by experience.
My top honeymoon recommendation is Sandals Grande St. Lucian. The setting on a peninsula between the Caribbean Sea and Rodney Bay is stunning, the overwater bungalows are the closest thing to a Maldives experience in the Caribbean, and the resort is large enough to have variety without feeling overwhelming. For couples who want a quieter, more intimate property, I often suggest Sandals Halcyon Beach, which is just down the road in St. Lucia and has a boutique feel.
If a client tells me they want a party atmosphere with a lively pool scene, I will steer them toward Sandals Montego Bay. If they want the newest property with a lot of energy, Sandals Dunn's River is worth looking at. But I will also tell you that Sandals Royal Bahamian leans more toward a party weekend vibe and is not my first pick for a honeymoon. That kind of candor is what you are paying for.
8. What Does the Booking Process Look Like Start to Finish?
You should know exactly what to expect before, during, and after you sign on. Ask your agent to walk you through the timeline. When is the deposit due? When is final payment? What documents will you need? Will they handle dining reservations and excursion bookings, or is that on you?
In my practice, I handle everything from the initial consultation through arrival. That includes building the itinerary, booking the resort, securing any room category upgrades when available, making dining reservations, coordinating airport transfers, and sending a pre departure email with everything you need to know. I also check in during your trip and follow up afterward. The goal is for you to do absolutely nothing except show up and enjoy your honeymoon.
9. What Is Your Cancellation and Rebooking Policy?
Life happens. Weddings get postponed. Plans change. You need to understand the cancellation terms before you pay a deposit, not after.
Ask your agent about the resort's cancellation policy, their own refund policy on planning fees, and whether travel insurance is recommended. I always recommend travel insurance for honeymoons. It is a relatively small cost compared to the total trip, and it protects you from the unexpected. A good agent will walk you through your options and help you understand what is covered versus what is not.
10. How Do I Reach You If I Need Something?
This sounds basic, but communication style matters. Some agents prefer email only. Others are available by text and phone. Some respond within an hour. Others take two days.
I give my honeymoon clients my direct email and WhatsApp access for emergencies. If something comes up while you are on your trip, I want you to be able to reach me quickly so I can handle it. Before you commit to an agent, make sure their communication style works for you. You are trusting this person with the most romantic trip of your life. You should feel confident that they will actually be there when you need them.
Why Working With a Travel Agent Beats Booking Online
Booking engines are designed to show you the lowest price, not the best fit. They cannot tell you that the garden view room at a certain resort faces a construction site, or that the beach on the north side of the property is calmer for swimming. They do not know that your May wedding means you should book a resort in the Southern Caribbean to avoid the early edges of hurricane season.
A honeymoon travel agent brings context, experience, and advocacy that no website can replicate. And in most cases, the price you pay through an agent is the same as or better than what you would find online, because agents have access to promotions, group rates, and negotiated extras that are not published on booking sites.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it more expensive to use a travel agent for my honeymoon?
In most cases, no. Travel agents earn commission from the resorts, so the resort rate is the same whether you book directly or through an agent. Some agents charge a planning fee for their time and expertise, but that fee often pays for itself through better room placement, stacked promotions, and the time you save not doing the research yourself.
When should I start working with a travel agent for my honeymoon?
As early as possible. For popular honeymoon resorts like Sandals, the best room categories sell out 6 to 12 months in advance. If you are planning a honeymoon around a specific date, reaching out 9 to 12 months ahead gives your agent the most options.
Can a travel agent help with flights too?
Some agents book flights, others do not. I book business class airfare for clients who want that service, but I recommend most couples book their own economy flights since airline prices fluctuate and direct booking gives you the most flexibility for changes.
What if I have already started planning but feel stuck?
That happens all the time. Many of my clients come to me after spending weeks researching and feeling more confused than when they started. It is never too late to bring in professional help. I can review what you have already found, give you clear direction, and take the planning off your plate.
Do I need to know exactly where I want to go before contacting an agent?
Absolutely not. That is part of what I do. If you tell me your budget, your travel dates, and what matters most to you as a couple, I can narrow the options down to two or three resorts that genuinely fit. You do not need to arrive with a plan. You just need to show up ready to talk about what you want your honeymoon to feel like.
What is the Sandals free honeymoon package?
Sandals offers a complimentary honeymoon package that includes special touches like breakfast in bed, a honeymoon dinner, a bottle of sparkling wine, and a sunset photo session. To qualify, you need to register before arrival and provide your wedding invitation or marriage certificate. Your travel agent should handle this for you as part of the booking process.
