Sandals Dunn's River is the newest addition to the Sandals collection, and it shows. Built on the grounds of the former Sandals Dunn's River (which closed in 2020), this is an entirely new resort with modern design, new restaurants, and a fresh energy that sets it apart from the more established Sandals properties.
Located in Ocho Rios on Jamaica's north coast, it sits just minutes from the famous Dunn's River Falls. The resort opened with 260 suites and has already built a strong reputation with repeat Sandals travelers who notice the difference between a new build and a renovation.
What Sets Dunn's River Apart
This resort was built from scratch with the benefit of everything Sandals has learned over the past 40 years. The design is contemporary. The room categories are updated. The restaurants feel current. There is a polish here that comes from starting fresh rather than renovating an older property.
The general manager, Kevin Clarke, has a visible presence on the grounds and an engaged staff that guests mention by name in nearly every review. That is not a small thing. When management is that present, the staff follows. I have seen enough resorts to know that this level of engagement from the team is not typical.
Dunn's River also benefits from its Jamaica location. Ocho Rios is one of the most naturally beautiful areas in the Caribbean, with lush mountains, waterfalls, and a coastline that feels wilder and more dramatic than the typical resort beach.
The Restaurants
The food is where Dunn's River really separates itself. The resort has 10 restaurants, and guests are talking about the dining here more than at any other current Sandals property.
Cascata is the Italian restaurant, and it is one of the most consistently praised dining spots in the entire Sandals portfolio right now. The pasta, the service, and the atmosphere all land.
Banyu serves Asian fusion and does it well. The wonton soup and miso salmon are popular orders. Like any restaurant, the experience can vary slightly from night to night, but the kitchen here is ambitious and usually delivers.
Edessa is the Greek restaurant, and the baked feta appetizer and warm baklava have become signature dishes that guests specifically mention. Edessa also serves a sit down breakfast that is a nice alternative to the buffet.
Zukas serves Latin fusion with quick service and excellent desserts. The tres leches and guava desserts are worth planning a meal around.
The Jerk Shack brings authentic Jamaican jerk flavors right on the beach. And Isola Pizzeria serves Neapolitan style pizza by the pool.
Hanami is the sushi restaurant, and guests who are not typically sushi eaters have been surprised by how much they enjoy it here. The staff is helpful with recommendations and patient with newcomers.
L'Amande is the French fine dining option. It is the dressiest restaurant on property, and while the experience can be uneven during busy periods, on a quieter night it is a beautiful meal.
The Rum Club deserves a mention too. It is not a full restaurant, but the small plates, premium rum selection, and TVs showing live sports make it a natural gathering spot.
The Rooms
Dunn's River offers room categories from Luxury Level through Butler Level, with some standout suite options.
The SkyPool Butler Suites are the headline here. These are elevated suites with private plunge pools and dedicated butler service. Guests who book these consistently rave about the experience, and the personalized touches (anniversary decorations, stocked fridges, custom arrangements) make them popular for celebrations.
Swim up suites connect directly to a shared pool from your patio, which is a nice middle ground between the standard rooms and the full butler experience.
The standard Luxury Level and Club Level rooms are well designed with modern finishes, comfortable beds, and solid views. Because this is a new build, even the entry level rooms feel current and fresh in a way that some older Sandals properties cannot match.
The Beach and Pools
The beach at Dunn's River is set against the mountainous backdrop of Ocho Rios, giving it a different look and feel than the flat, palm lined beaches you see at the Bahamas or Turks and Caicos properties. There is more visual drama here.
The main pool area is lively, with a swim up bar and plenty of lounge space. For a quieter pool experience, the butler level pool areas provide more privacy.
Water sports are included: kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, glass bottom boat rides, and more. The water along this stretch of Jamaica's coast can be a bit rougher than St. Lucia's Rodney Bay, so conditions will vary day to day.
Activities and Entertainment
Sandals Dunn's River has one of the most active entertainment programs in the Sandals collection. The Playmakers team runs activities throughout the day, from pool fitness classes to candle making, pottery, sip and paint sessions, and jewelry workshops.
Evening entertainment includes live music, themed parties, fire shows, and the kind of Caribbean energy that keeps you out later than you planned.
The Red Lane Spa is on site, and the Himalayan Salt Stone massage comes highly recommended by guests.
Golf enthusiasts get complimentary greens fees at a nearby course, with transport included. Tennis is available on property.
For off resort excursions, Dunn's River Falls is the obvious choice and it is practically at your doorstep. Ocho Rios also offers rainforest tours, Blue Hole visits, and Mystic Mountain for zip lining and bobsledding.
Who This Resort Is Best For
Couples who want a modern resort with excellent dining and a lively atmosphere. Dunn's River has energy without being overwhelming. It hits that balance between active and relaxing that appeals to a wide range of travelers.
Honeymoons work beautifully here, especially in the SkyPool Butler Suites where the personal touches are exceptional. Anniversary trips are equally strong, and the resort's attention to celebration details (room decorations, special dinners, vow renewals) is well executed.
Jamaica first timers will love the location. Being so close to Dunn's River Falls and the natural attractions of Ocho Rios gives you a taste of the island that you cannot get from a more isolated resort.
Couples who are already Sandals loyalists and want something new will appreciate how different this property feels from the older resorts. The design, the dining, and the overall energy are noticeably updated.
Getting There
Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay is the primary arrival point. It is about 90 minutes by car to the resort, and airport transfers are included with your stay. The drive along the coast is scenic and gives you a real feel for Jamaica.
From New England, direct flights from Boston to Montego Bay are available seasonally through JetBlue. Otherwise, connections through Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, or Atlanta are the most common routes. Total travel time from Boston runs about five to seven hours depending on connections.
The Bottom Line
Sandals Dunn's River is the freshest resort in the Sandals collection, and it is earning its reputation quickly. The restaurants are excellent, the rooms are modern, the service is personal, and the Jamaica location gives it a character that the more polished island resorts do not have.
This is the resort I recommend for couples who want great food, a lively atmosphere, and the chance to experience the real Jamaica while still enjoying the all inclusive Sandals experience. It is also the one I suggest when clients tell me they have done Sandals before and want something that feels new.
If Jamaica and Dunn's River sound like the right fit, I am happy to walk you through room options, timing, and how to get the best value on your booking.
