Sandals Destination Wedding: What to Know First

I get this question at least twice a week. A couple gets engaged, somebody mentions a destination wedding, and suddenly they are deep in a Google spiral trying to figure out if Sandals is the right move. Most of the information out there is either from Sandals marketing or from random forum posts circa 2018. So here is what I actually tell my clients when they ask.
The Free Wedding Package Is Real
Sandals includes a complimentary wedding package called the Sweetheart Package when you book seven nights or more in a Club or Butler level room. This is not a gimmick or a bait and switch. It is a real wedding with real inclusions.
The Sweetheart Package covers your wedding planning team, a ceremony location at the resort, pre recorded musical accompaniment, an orchid bouquet and boutonniere, a two tier wedding cake, a one hour private cocktail reception with hors d'oeuvres and sparkling wine, a honeymoon dinner at one of the specialty restaurants, and a $200 credit toward both photography and videography packages. They also handle your license document preparation, which takes one of the most confusing parts of a foreign wedding off your plate.
You also get a free anniversary return night on a future visit, which is a nice touch that most couples forget about until I remind them a year later.
The Upgraded Packages
If you are bringing guests, you will want to look beyond the Sweetheart Package.
The Two Love Birds Package is designed for just the couple and adds 10 digital images, a bridal attendant, and a private candlelight dinner for two. It is a good step up if you want more documentation of the day without bringing a crowd.
The Bliss Package is where things open up for groups of 12 or more. You get 20 digital images, a one hour welcome cocktail event, pre wedding celebrations, a two hour dinner reception with DJ entertainment, and room discounts for your guest block. During September through December, every sixth room books free. January through August, it is every twelfth room. Those room discounts add up fast when you are coordinating travel for a group.
The Epic Package is for weddings of 52 or more guests and includes enhanced photography credits up to $500, a two hour pre wedding celebration dinner, and expanded DJ entertainment at the reception.
Which Resort for a Destination Wedding
This depends entirely on the size of your group and the vibe you want.
For an intimate wedding with just the two of you or a handful of close family, Sandals Halcyon Beach in St. Lucia is hard to beat. The resort is small enough that it feels like you have taken over the place, and the beach ceremony locations are gorgeous without feeling staged.
For a mid size group of 20 to 40 guests, Sandals Grande St. Lucian gives you more space, more restaurant options for group dinners, and that peninsula setting with the Pitons in the background. Your wedding photos will be unreal.
Sandals Dunn's River in Jamaica is the newest property and has the most contemporary feel. If your group skews younger or you want a resort that feels current and energetic, this is the one.
Sandals Montego Bay works well for larger weddings because of its proximity to the airport. Your guests land and they are at the resort in under 15 minutes. When you are coordinating arrivals for 30 or 40 people, that matters more than you think.
What People Get Wrong About Destination Weddings
The biggest misconception is that a destination wedding is just a ceremony on a beach and then everyone goes back to the pool. A Sandals destination wedding is a multi day event. You have the welcome cocktails, the rehearsal dinner, the ceremony, the reception, and then you and your partner stay for the honeymoon while your guests enjoy the rest of their vacation. The whole experience unfolds over several days, and that is what makes it feel different from a traditional wedding.
The second misconception is that it is more expensive. For the couple, yes, you are paying for a vacation on top of your wedding. But for your total event cost, a destination wedding at Sandals almost always comes in under what a comparable wedding costs at home. You are not renting a venue, hiring a caterer, coordinating vendors, or tipping 15 different people. The all inclusive model covers most of it.
The third thing people do not realize is how much the planning team handles. You are not DIYing a wedding in a foreign country. Sandals has dedicated wedding planners who coordinate everything before you arrive, and an onsite team that handles setup, execution, and breakdown. You show up, and it is done.
The Legal Side
Every island has different requirements for legal marriage. Sandals handles the paperwork, but you do need to bring the correct documents. In most cases that means valid passports, birth certificates, and if applicable, divorce decrees or death certificates from a previous marriage. Some islands require you to be on the island for a minimum number of days before the ceremony.
I walk my clients through the specific requirements for their chosen island well before departure so there are no surprises. This is one of those areas where having an agent who has done this before saves you real stress.
Timing and Booking
Sandals destination weddings book out, especially at the more popular resorts during peak season. If you are planning a wedding between December and April, I recommend booking at least 10 to 12 months in advance. Off peak weddings from May through November, excluding major holidays, offer more flexibility and often better rates for your guest block.
The ceremonies are available Monday through Thursday between 9 AM and 2 PM for the complimentary and vow renewal packages. If you want a sunset ceremony or a Saturday wedding, that is possible through the upgraded packages.
How I Help With Destination Weddings
I coordinate the entire process. Room blocks for your guests, group rates, travel logistics, dietary needs, excursion planning for your group, and communication with the Sandals wedding team. I have done this enough times to know where the friction points are, and my job is to eliminate them before you ever feel them.
If a destination wedding at Sandals has been on your mind, even loosely, I am happy to talk through whether it makes sense for your group and which resort and package fit best.
